AS1796 is the Australian
Standard relating to the certification of welders and welding supervisors.
AS1796 which was last published in 2001 has stood the test of time but now
needs to be revised to align the standard with current trends and international
best practice.
This presentation will provide an overview of
the draft with a focus on four key aspects—
· Alignment of welder
requirements to AS/NZS ISO 9606.1 (consistent with AS 3992)
· Updating the welding
supervisor requirements consistent with AS/NZS 2214
· Adding a new
qualification for welding inspectors
· Application of current
Standards Australia policy requirements

THE PRESENTER:
Bruce Cannon is Weld Australia’s Principal Welding Engineer and Technical Publications Manager. He is Chair of the Standards Australia Committee WD-003 and has represented Australia at ISO meetings, including the current revision of ISO 9606-1.
