Need Help Understanding the Processes and Parameters Required for Successful Stainless Steel Welding?
Stainless steels are usually specified because of their enhanced corrosion resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance, or their strength. With various types of stainless steel available, there are specific welding processes and techniques that must be employed to ensure that the corrosion and oxidation resistance and other mechanical properties are not impaired.
This two-day course will give participants a working knowledge of the welding metallurgy and weldability of stainless steels. Attendees will walk away with an understanding of the various types of stainless steel, and how to pre-heat, weld, and post-heat treat them without introducing imperfections, causing cracking or otherwise disrupting their beneficial mechanical properties.

About the Presenter Dr John Lippold
Dr. Lippold is Emeritus Professor in the Welding Engineering Program at Ohio State University (OHU). He retired from OSU in 2016 after more than 20 years on the faculty having trained over 60 graduate students. He received his Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he was a student of Dr Warren F. Savage. He worked at the Sandia Livermore Laboratory in California for seven years, and at the Edison Welding Institute for 10 years. In 1995, he joined the faculty of the Welding Engineering Program at OSU.
Over the past 40 years, Dr Lippold has been involved in research activities designed to gain a better understanding of the welding metallurgy and weldability of engineering materials. This includes both fundamental and applied topics with a high degree of industrial relevance. Based on this research, Dr Lippold has published over 300 technical papers and reports. He is recognised internationally in the field of stainless steel and high alloy welding metallurgy, and weldability testing. He has published three widely used textbooks, Welding Metallurgy and Weldability of Stainless Steels (2005), Welding Metallurgy and Weldability of Nickel-base Alloys (2009), and Welding Metallurgy and Weldability (2014).
He won the Charles H. Jennings Memorial Award (1978, 1981, 2005, 2017), the William Spraragen Memorial Award (1979, 1993, 2012, 2015, 2018), the Warren F. Savage Memorial Award (1994, 2000, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016), the McKay-Helm Award (1995, 1997, 2011), the Lincoln Gold Medal (1983), the A.F. Davis Silver Medal (2001), the Hobart Memorial Award (2011), the Irrgang Award (2002), the R.D Thomas Award (2014), and the Plummer Memorial Educational Lecture Award (2002), all from the American Welding Society (AWS). He has also been the recipient of the Buehler Technical Paper Merit Award (1985, 1989) from the International Metallographic Society.
In 1997, he presented the Comfort A. Adam’s Memorial Lecture at the AWS Annual Convention in Los Angeles. He also won the Jaeger Lecture Award (2008) and the Yoshiaki Arata Award (2009) from the International Institute of Welding. Dr Lippold is a Fellow of ASM International (1994), the American Welding Society (1996), and the International Institute of Welding (2022). He is currently Lead Editor of the international journal Welding in the World published by Springer in conjunction with IIW.
